TGV is a French network of high-speed electric trains developed by GEC-Alsthom (now Alstom) and the French national railway operator SNCF. Currently managed by SNCF. The first line was opened in 1981 between Paris and Lyon.
Today, the TGV network covers cities in the south, west and northeast of France. Some neighboring countries, including Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, built their TGV lines and connected them to the French network. TGV trains are capable of moving at speeds of up to 320 km / h, however, during testing in April 2007, the train was able to reach a speed of 574.8 km / h.
The second place went to the German Transrapid trains with an estimated maximum speed of 500 km / h.
The history of Transrapid began almost a century ago. In 1922, German engineer German Kemper set up the first experiments using a magnetic pad. The practical implementation of the project began only in 1978, when a consortium was created, which included TyssenKrupp and Siemens. The first was responsible for the chassis, the second for all electrics.
In their modern design, these trains can reach speeds of up to 500 km / h. Moreover, energy consumption is much less than other high-speed trains.
An honorable third place was given to AVE high-speed trains running in Spain.
These modern trains run between Madrid and the country’s largest cities. The main directions are connected with the capital: today, Madrid has high-speed connections with cities such as Seville, Barcelona, Huesca, Valladolid, Malaga, Albacete and Valencia. In addition, there are two lines from Barcelona – to Malaga and Seville.
In 2008, the AVE Class 103 train reached a speed of 350 km / h, and in 2006, the 005 train reached a speed of 403.7 km / h on trial runs on the Madrid-Zaragoza route.
Fourth place went to the German ICE trains competing with Transrapid .
Intercity-Express (ICE) is a network of high-speed trains, mainly distributed in Germany, developed by Deutsche Bahn. The current generation of Intercity-Express trains, ICE 3, was developed by a consortium of Siemens AG and Bombardier, under the joint leadership of Siemens AG.
